4-H Grow Units
Help teachers to:
- Integrate plant science with curriculum,
- Instill an appreciation of nature,
- Provide hands-on training for students.
4-H has several Grow Units located at elementary, middle schools, and an alternative
high school. Students enjoy growing, experimenting and learning about plants right
in the comfort of their own classroom. By using Grow Units, teachers can integrate
math, science, nutrition, social studies and language arts into their lessons. Many
schools have created butterfly, native plant, hummingbird and other unique gardens
that they started with plants grown in their Grow Units. This expands the scope
of knowledge for their students and creates an awareness for nature, environmental
stewardship, and a sense of community by taking care of their "outdoor classroom."

Above, Fourth Grade students at
Palms Elementary School explore plant growth using the scientific method.

The St. Clair County 4-H Growing Unit requires attendance at an annual hands-on
workshop for these teachers to help them integrate growing projects with their everyday
curriculum. There is a fee to attend this workshop. This workshop is eligible
for Eisenhower funds.
