Senior Project Fresh 2007
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
- Program provides eligible participants with coupons to purchase locally grown fruits and vegetables at authorized farmers’ markets and roadside stands
- Program designed to improve nutrition and support Michigan’s farmers
- In Michigan, called “Project FRESH”
Who is Eligible for Senior Project FRESH?
- Seniors who are 60 years of age or older.
- Caregivers/proxy may apply on behalf of a senior
- Residents of participating counties (coupons can be spent at any MI Farmers’ Market that accepts Project FRESH coupons)
- Gross Income 185% of poverty or less
How Does Senior Project FRESH Work?
- Specially printed Coupon Booklets are issued to participating lead agencies (MSU Extension)
- Each Coupon Booklet contains ten $2 coupons
- MSU Extension Nutrition Instructors meet with seniors to determine Senior Project FRESH eligibility
- All seniors receive Nutrition Education
- Eligible seniors receive $20 worth of coupons from USDA funds
How Does Senior Project FRESH Work?
- MDCH/WIC contracts with Market Masters and farmers
- Participants take coupons to Farmers’ Markets to purchase fruits and vegetables
- Individual farmers accept coupons, then take them to Market Masters for redemption from MDCH/WIC
- Not all farmers at Farmers’ Markets accept Project FRESH coupons: Look for the Sign!
- FREE Coupons can be given to eligible seniors from June 1 through September 30
- Coupons can be used at Farmers’ Markets to purchase items from June 1 through October 31
- Coupons are given to individuals, but income is based on household total
- No cash back for coupons
All coupons have been issued for this growing season, please look for the Senior Project Fresh program next Spring from your St. Clair County MSU Extension office
